Jay Burns

Jay Burns returns to the Coyote football program for the first time since serving as a senior tight end for USD in 2012. Burns serves as a quality control coach while working primarily with the defense.

A native of Kansas City, Kansas, Burns played two years at Butler Community College before arriving in Vermillion. He competed in all 22 games and earned 15 starts in two seasons with the Coyotes. In addition to run blocking and pass protection, Burns caught eight passes for 79 yards.

Burns graduated from USD in 2013 with a degree in kinesiology & sport science with a specialization in sport management. Upon graduation, he served four years as an educator and coach at Rockhurst High School in Kansas City, Missouri, under coach Tony Severino. Burns spent the 2017 season in the same capacity at H.B. Plant High School in Tampa, Florida, under coach Robert Weiner.
